  • Today is #WorldOceanDay. A time to express how grateful we are for the Ocean.

It is our playground, our joy, our chapel. The reason why we get up to work and appreciate every day. The source of life, that we must preserve at all costs.

It goes in four words: protect what you love.

The 2022 theme of the @worldoceanday is "Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean." Talk to your friends, your family, your colleagues. Together, we can protect the mother nature of the Ocean, all year round and endlessly.

Let’s meet up tonight at @rove.lisboa to celebrate the Ocean with the vernissage of ā€œAfter Careā€, an exhibition by our dearest @lizzyartwork and @despiritosanto and many more. The exhibition will then be on display until the 8th of July.

  • Heritage of Surfboard Design: Tom Blake’s Hollow Board

As the surf culture was slowly spreading through the US, a young American named Tom Blake visited Hawaii in the 1920s and studied the traditional ā€œoloā€ and ā€œalaiaā€ boards to start shaping his own. His main concern was to reduce the weight to gain some speed.

In 1932, he came up with a ā€œskin-on-frameā€ design on wooden ribs: his Hollow boards were mainly 12 feet or longer, with flat deck and bottom, a pointed tail, a rounded nose and boxy square rails.Ā

Read more on our website šŸ“ā€ā˜ ļø

From Tom Blake’s hollow board and Bob Simmons’ Planing Hull to the youngest Mini-Simmons, we introduce in ourĀ ā€œHeritage of Surfboard Designā€ series a selection of iconic boards that set the foundations of modern-day shaping and surf.

  • Some say we have the best selection of single fins in town… you tell us!

Picking your own single fin can be quite tricky. You must take in considerations:
- the size: if you are new to it, an easy trick is to go one inch of fin for every foot of board length (9" fin for a 9' board). But this is only a basic tip, and not a rule!
- the width: water traveling from the leading edge takes longer as that width is increased, so a wide fin takes longer to make a turn than a narrow one.
- the base: basically, more fin base equals more drive.
- the foil: most fins are tapered thinner as they reach the tip, with a continuous curve, which will keep the water flowing. But not all of them! Some fins present flat part as well.
- the flex: this acts like a spring that rebounds when coming out of a turn, but too much flex can cause a ā€œbottom outā€.
- the material: FiberglassĀ is still the most common one, but not the only one, as VolanĀ glass fins andĀ PlasticĀ fins have their own characteristics.

Ready to pick your new single fin? Come at the shop to get the best advices from @joao_pereira and visit our website šŸš€

  • The Heritage of Surfboard Design ~

Surfboards were not always 5 to 6 feet thrusters. Those are only the distant child of a long lineage of boards whose shapes have evolved over decades. In the early XXth century, when surfing arrived from Hawaii to occidental countries, iconic surfers such as George Freeth and Duke Kahanamoku were riding traditional all-wooden ā€œplank boardsā€, measuring up to 17 feet, and what is called a ā€œlongboardā€ nowadays was simply known as a ā€œboardā€ until the late 1960s.

Thanks to their knowledge passed on from one generation to the next, visionary shapers have invented new shapes, humbly inspired and forever indebted to the innovations and wisdom of elderly craftsmen. Each of them contributes to the history of surfboard design, made of trials, errors, discoveries and revolutions.

These ideas underlie how @wavegliders approaches shaping, always seeking to know and find out the answers to questions previously left unanswered, adapting past creations to the new world while protecting this heritage. All of that with one goal in mind: the simple joy of wave-riding, remained unchanged for centuries.

From Tom Blake’s hollow board (1929) and Bob Simmons’ Planing Hull (1950) to the youngest Mini-Simmons (2006), we introduce in ourĀ Heritage of Surfboard designĀ series a selection of iconic board designs that set the foundations of modern-day shaping and surf.
